Celebrating Women in Leadership: Ways to Honor Women in your Workforce

Kenya has always been home to powerful and inspiring women who have shattered the glass ceiling and paved way for others. Despite numerous challenges and obstacles, women have emerged as trailblazers in their respective fields, leaving an indelible mark on Kenya's workforce and society at large. From business leaders to political figures, from activists to artists, they have shown us that there are no limits to what we can achieve when we set our minds to it.

This year as we celebrate Women's History Month, I recognize the importance of diversity and inclusion in our workforce and strive to create a more equitable society where women can thrive and lead.

As an employer, there are several meaningful measures you can take to show solidarity and support for your women employees throughout the year, not just in March.

Here are ideas to consider championing at your organization:

1. Host insightful "lunch and learns"
Consider coordinating an information session during a lunch break, where you have presenters highlighting influential women throughout history and the present day. This is a great way to educate staff members on prominent historical figures and celebrate their milestones. Topics can include everything from pivotal women in politics to inspiring women business leaders to famous female inventors who have changed the world.

2. Initiate an employee recognition program
Ask employees to nominate a "woman of the year" to show appreciation for an outstanding woman on your staff. Recognize the winner company-wide by hosting a ceremony at an all-hands meeting or by making an announcement in a company newsletter, email or webpage. You might even honor the recipient with a prize, plaque or poster that includes their colleagues' words of praise. Other awards could also be given throughout the year, perhaps quarterly, for instance, a "woman to watch" award or a "women who support other women" award.

3. Encourage thoughtful reflection and interaction
Inspire employees to interact with each other by inviting them to post notes on a bulletin board or other community space sharing about women who have made a positive impact on their lives. Spotlighting incredible women within the company or announcing specific contributions and achievements of the women in your company are other creative ways to spark appreciation and bonding. Activities like this can foster conversations and create deeper connections among your employees.

From the pioneering efforts of trailblazers like Wangari Maathai to the tireless work of women in all sectors, it is clear that we, as women, have played a critical role in building our nation. Our hard work and dedication deserve recognition and celebration.

However, despite these accomplishments, women in Kenya still face significant challenges in the workforce, including discrimination and unequal opportunities. According to a recent report by the International Labour Organization, women in Kenya earn 35% less than men, and only 27% of managerial positions are held by women.

These statistics are concerning and demonstrate the need for continued efforts to promote gender equality and women's empowerment. As a society, we must do more to break down the barriers that prevent women from reaching their full potential and ensure that all women have equal access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.

We must also celebrate and honor the contributions of women in leadership, not just on International Women's Day, but every day. By highlighting the achievements of women in the workforce, we can inspire future generations and create a culture that values and supports women in leadership roles.

Let us take this moment to honor the women who have come before us and to celebrate the women who are leading the charge today. Let us support one another, uplift one another, and continue to work together towards a brighter future for all women in Kenya.

Happy International Women's Month!
