Mid-Year Career Check-In: Are You on Track with Your Goals?
We’re halfway through the year (yes—already!). And whether the last few months flew by or dragged along, now is the perfect time for a reset. Not just a review of your to-do list—but a real, honest check-in with yourself.
Are you where you thought you’d be? Are your career goals still clear—or have they been buried under meetings, deadlines, and the everyday hustle?
Let’s walk through a few questions to help you assess, refocus, and keep moving forward—with purpose.
1. What did you set out to achieve this year?
Think back to January.
Did you set career goals? A promotion? New skills? A job change? Better work-life integration?
Did you set career goals? A promotion? New skills? A job change? Better work-life integration?
Even if you didn’t write them down, you probably had some quiet ambitions.
Now’s the time to revisit them. Which ones have you made progress on? Which ones have fallen off the radar? And do they still matter to you? Because goals change. That’s okay.
What matters is whether your actions still align with the version of success you’re working toward now.
2. What’s working—and what’s not?
Be honest with yourself. What habits, routines, or mindsets are helping you thrive? What’s draining you? What’s getting in your way?
Sometimes it’s external—like a role that no longer challenges you. Other times, it’s internal—like fear of speaking up or a tendency to downplay your achievements.
Identify the wins. Celebrate them. Then name the roadblocks. You can’t fix what you won’t face.
3. Have you had a conversation about your growth?
If you’re in a role where growth is possible, ask yourself: Have you made your ambitions known?
Don’t assume your manager knows what you’re aiming for. Schedule that check-in. Share your goals. Ask for feedback. Request opportunities.
And if you’ve already had that conversation—but nothing has changed—it might be time to ask tougher questions.
4. What can you commit to for the next six months?
This isn’t about adding pressure. It’s about focus. Think of one or two things you want to actively work on in the second half of the year.
It could be:
- Taking a course to strengthen your skills
- Updating your CV and exploring new roles
- Asking for more responsibility
- Creating better work-life boundaries
- Reconnecting with your professional network
Big or small—commit to something. Progress loves clarity.
5. Are you being kind to yourself?
Not every goal will be checked off by December. That’s okay.
Some seasons are for pushing forward. Others are for regrouping. What matters most is that you’re not on autopilot.
You’re checking in. You’re reflecting. You’re choosing to move with intention. That’s already a powerful shift.
You don’t need a new year to make a new start.
Mid-year is just as powerful a moment to pause, pivot, and recommit.
So, take stock. Celebrate what’s working. Adjust what isn’t and give yourself permission to chase goals that still light you up—and let go of the ones that no longer fit.
Your career is a journey, not a race. You have time, options and what it takes to finish the year strong.
