Prepping for a salary review? Here’s what you need to know

We are in March, which marks the end of Q1, and most organizations will be conducting end-of-quarter reviews. And maybe, you might want to use this opportunity to request a salary review. Here are some tips to help you navigate the conversation more easily.

Do your homework
Before requesting a salary review, understand your market value. Research what similar roles are paying in Kenya, particularly within your industry.

Here are a couple of things you need to note:

1. Your key achievements - These are measurable results and additional responsibilities you’ve taken on. This keeps the discussion fact-based rather than emotional.

2. Pick the right timing - Request the conversation after a strong performance, project completion, or during formal appraisal periods. Ask for a scheduled meeting instead of bringing it up casually.

3. Lead with value, not need - Avoid framing the discussion around personal financial pressure (rent increases, school fees, etc.). While valid, employers make compensation decisions based on business impact. Instead, focus on the value you bring and the growth in your role

4. Be ready for different outcomes - Your salary increase request may be approved, or you could be given new performance targets for the salary review to be approved. Your salary review request could also be declined due to budget constraints. Whatever happens, stay composed and ask what specific milestones would justify a review in the future.

In addition, remember that a salary review conversation is a professional discussion, not a confrontation. Approach it with preparation, confidence, and respect. Even if the outcome is not immediate, how you handle the conversation can shape your employer's view of your maturity, leadership potential, and long-term value to the organization.

Stay focused on growth and remain open to feedback.
